Spartanburg County Teen Arrested for Blue Light Violation and Reckless Driving

Lillian Jean-Kali Smith, 18, was taken into custody late Saturday night, March 15, 2025, by the Lyman Police Department in Spartanburg County. Authorities arrested Smith at approximately 11:33 p.m. in the vicinity of 100 S 411, charging her with multiple traffic offenses.

Smith, a Spartanburg resident, faces charges including a blue light violation—no injury (first offense) under South Carolina Code § 56-5-750, and reckless driving under South Carolina Code § 56-5-2920. The blue light violation charge typically applies when a driver fails to stop for law enforcement attempting a traffic stop, even if no injury results. As a first offense, it is classified as a misdemeanor punishable by up to three years in prison and fines ranging from $500 to $1,000.

Additionally, reckless driving, defined as operating a vehicle in a manner demonstrating “willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property,” is also a misdemeanor. A conviction carries a fine of up to $200, a potential jail sentence of up to 30 days, and a six-month driver’s license suspension.

Smith, who stands 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 100 pounds, was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center following her arrest. It remains unclear whether she was granted bond or if she has retained legal counsel. The case will proceed through the local court system, where she may face additional penalties if convicted.

Authorities emphasize the importance of complying with traffic stops to avoid escalation and potential legal consequences.
